Childhood and Early Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 6), including initial teacher certification (MIITC), M.S.Ed
The MIITC program will culminate in a master of science in education degree and fulfills course requirements for initial and professional New York State certification in Childhood and Early Childhood Education (Birth – Grade 6).

1. Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with an academic major in one of the liberal arts or sciences.
2. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale).
3. Submit a score from either the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) OR the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
4. Meet with a department adviser to review all college transcripts to determine eligibility prior to applying to the program. (Please e-mail Ellen Friedland to schedule an appointment.
5. Submit official transcripts from all colleges attended with your application.
6. Submit a completed Application Requirement Worksheet (included in the application packet) detailing:
a. College-level work in each of the following: English, mathematics, science, and social studies.
b. Your undergraduate major or courses applicable to an acceptable concentration.
c. Two years of high school or two semesters of college study in one foreign language (high school transcript should be submitted with application).
7. Write a well-crafted statement addressing the following:
a. Your reasons for wanting to become a childhood/early childhood teacher and related professional experiences.
b. Your professional goals.
Your statement will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

Note: Please refer to the rubric provided with the application materials for the statement prompts and specific evaluation criteria.
8. Submit three reference letters on special department forms (included in application packet) that attest to the applicant’s potential as a graduate student and as a teacher. Please note that two references must be from college professors/instructors whom the applicant had as an instructor.
Applicants will be judged on demonstrated academic records, the strength of recommendations, and the quality of the candidate’s statement. To receive initial certification, students must successfully pass the applicable New York State certification exams.
