Dear Buffalo State University Community,
I have been reflecting upon what transpired during our most recent election cycle and contemplating the most effective ways to sustain our unwavering commitment here at Buffalo State University to providing a diverse and inclusive campus with excellence in teaching, research, service, scholarship, creative activity, and cultural enrichment.
What I am drawn back to is the election watch party I had the privilege of attending on our campus. It was inspiring to see our campus community come together, united by the shared experience of witnessing democracy in action.
The energy in the room was palpable. Our faculty and professional staff were actively engaging students in vibrant discussions, informing them about the electoral process, and offering insightful commentary on the unfolding events as reported by various news outlets. Witnessing these interactions, I was struck by the profound embodiment of our shared commitment to fostering a vibrant democratic environment here at Buffalo State.
Civic engagement is the cornerstone of a free democracy and extends beyond casting a vote—it is an empowering act that allows every individual to contribute to shaping the future of our society. It comes alive in various ways on our campus, from attending educational forums, participating in voter registration drives, to joining rallies, and more. Each of these activities has played a role in fostering a spirit of active citizenship at Buffalo State, and I am filled with admiration for the way our community has risen to the challenge.
Our commitment to democratic ideals is evident in the recent establishment of an on-campus polling site for the campus and surrounding community. This site is more than a location; it is a testament to our dedication to making democracy accessible to our campus and the surrounding community. As a comprehensive public university, we take pride in our role of instilling our students with the education and values necessary to make meaningful contributions to society. We embrace our responsibility as an anchor institution, nestled between the Black Rock, West Side, and Elmwood communities, fostering not just academic growth but also civic responsibility among our students and within our communities.
For all of our endeavors this election cycle, I am proud to announce that we have been named, once again an ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting. Thank you to all of the faculty, staff, and students who made this recognition possible.
Central to our endeavors is our unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and inclusion. We believe in creating a space where diverse voices and perspectives are not just heard but celebrated. Our commitment to a safe and respectful environment remains strong, ensuring everyone has the right to voice their opinions within the guidelines of our time, place, and manner policies.
As we move forward, let us remember that elections take place every year, not just every four years. They provide us with the opportunity to have a say in who leads us at every level and in every branch of government. It is not tied to achieving a particular outcome, but rather, it is about the process and the privilege of being able to voice our preferences and concerns.
Reflecting on my own experiences growing up in a pre-Civil Rights era, I cannot overstate the importance of honoring the sacrifices made by those who fought for the franchise for women and people of color. Every vote we cast is a tribute to their struggle and a reminder of the progress we have made as a society and commitment to becoming “a more perfect union.”
I want to take a moment to recognize the anxiety, uncertainty, fear, and even apathy that some may be experiencing. Let me assure you that at Buffalo State, we stand united, committed to ensuring that every member of our community feels heard, valued, and supported. I encourage you all to stay informed, remain engaged, and continue to exercise your democratic rights.
Thank you for embodying Buffalo State’s commitment to promoting justice, equity, diversity, and democratic engagement. Let’s continue to work together, to listen and learn from each other, and to strive for a more inclusive and participatory democracy. Remember, every election matters, every vote counts, and every Bengal votes!
Warm regards,
Bonita R. Durand, Ph.D.
Interim president, Buffalo State University
