Kafka characters aside, artists don’t usually intend to starve. But to be successful, creative professionals must be both shrewd business planners and tireless workhorses if they hope to make their muse their livelihood.
In addition to developing a body of work, artists and designers must continually refine their skills, market their wares, and hone their résumés and interview skills. And in James Goodrich’s AAD 470: Senior Seminar/Exhibition class, art and design students must also present a solo exhibition as a requirement of the course.
“Just as they might in their professional lives, student artists are responsible for securing the exhibition space, promoting the event, mounting the work, and engaging the audience,” said Goodrich, lecturer of art and design.
This is in addition to the countless hours spent in the studio, creating and developing their pieces.
“Independently presenting their work gives students valuable practical experience in a number of activities they will face in their future careers as graphic designers, craft artisans, or fine artists,” Goodrich said. “It’s a great learning opportunity.”
Students will showcase their work on campus and in the community over the next several weeks. Please stop by and support them if you can.
