The following is a statement from Buffalo State Interim President Bonita R. Durand, following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on federal student loan forgiveness:

“The recent decision from the United States Supreme Court striking down the student loan debt forgiveness plan has been greeted with disappointment across the nation, as it will have profound implications on countless current and former students and families. At Buffalo State University, we understand the financial burden that comes with student loans and the hindrance it can pose on the path of educational, career, and personal aspirations, and we recognize that this decision is a lost opportunity to provide much-needed relief for those struggling with college debt. It is disheartening to see the potential barriers this decision could impose on our nation’s bright minds, particularly those of limited financial means.

“At Buffalo State, we view education as a fundamental right—a gateway to opportunity and a cornerstone for individual and societal development. I want to assure the members of our community that despite this national setback, we stand with Chancellor King, the SUNY Board of Trustees, and the entire State University of New York system in expressing our commitment to helping all students find financial stability as they pursue their educational goals. We strongly believe that investing in education is investing in our future—a future we are actively working to make accessible to all.

“To our students, we recognize the challenges you face and want to assure you that you are not alone on this journey. We believe in the possibilities and potential that lie within each scholar, and we are committed to making these potentials realities. Our university remains your steadfast partner in pursuit of your dreams, extending our utmost support to facilitate your growth and success every step of the way. We will continue to review our tuition structure and financial aid options, and explore creative avenues for scholarships and fundraising, while working with legislators to implement policies that make higher education more affordable.

“I encourage our community to remain resilient during these challenging times. As a beacon of learning, we will continue to shine our light and guide our students toward realizing their dreams.”
