The minor in Diverse Literatures offers students the opportunity to study texts by writers from diverse backgrounds, with a focus on American literature. The minor includes genre and topic-based courses on race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and (dis)ability and highlights the contributions of diverse writers on American literature, culture, and society.
Students design their program with their minor adviser or the English Department chair.
Admission Requirements
Any matriculated student in good academic standing may declare this program.
Learning Outcomes
Students will:
1. Identify different forms of diversity in literature—including racial, ethnic, sexual, class and ability-based forms of difference
2. discuss ways in which writers from diverse backgrounds critique structures of power, privilege, and domination
3. evaluate ways diverse writers have always existed within traditional literary canons, and have used conventions of genre, style and form to their own
