AmeriCorps Segal Awards
Awards are currently valued at $7,395/year and could grow in value in future years. Teaching fellows can potentially earn two years of AmeriCorps awards once they become the teacher of record in a classroom.
(Federal) Teacher Loan Forgiveness
Teachers who teach for five years in a school that serves low-income students are eligible for $17,500 in loan forgiveness if they teach special ed or secondary math/science.
TEACH Grants
Students who meet academic criteria and agree to teach in a high-need field for four years are eligible for grants of up to $4,000.
NYS Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program
The NYS Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program provides student loan forgiveness for the purpose of attracting and retaining teachers serving in hard-to-staff districts or who teach in subject-shortage areas in New York State. Up to $5,000 annual; $20,000 lifetime.
Graduate Opportunity Program
Students who were enrolled in the Educational Opportunity Program or similar during undergrad and attend a SUNY school are eligible for partial tuition assistance.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness
Individuals who work for a public or nonprofit organization are in income-based repayment for 10 years and then have any remaining balance forgiven.
Enhanced Tuition Awards (ETA) program
Provides tuition awards adding up to $6,000 to undergraduate students who are New York State residents attending a participating private college located in New York State.
Masters-in-Education Teacher Incentive Scholarship Program
Provides students who graduate with at least a 3.5 GPA from undergrad who pledge to teach in a NYS public school with a full tuition scholarship for a master’s degree in education at a State University of New York (SUNY) or City University of New York (CUNY) college or university for two years.
TEACH Scholarship from TEACH.org
Teach NY launched this spring and offers $1,000 direct payment to candidates + $100 in certification cost reimbursement.
School Funds
Selected schools may be able to contribute to fellows’ tuition if they agree to work at that school for a period of time.
Empire State Teacher Residency Program
NYS is awarding $30 million to school districts to support teacher residency programs in 2024. Some of this funding may be able to support teaching fellows.
CoSers (Cooperative Service Agreements)
Can reimburse a large percentage of money districts spend on residency programs, but only districts working with BOCES are eligible (this does not include BPS or other Big Five districts or charter schools).
