Information about Tonight's Off-campus Incident that Led to Shelter in Place

An off-campus occurrence tonight on Grant Street, believed to be a road-rage incident involving an occupant of one vehicle shooting at another, resulted in Buffalo Police and University Police searching for and apprehending the individuals believed to be involved.This is what led to the shelter in place at Buffalo State, which has been lifted. The safety and security of our campus community is a top priority at Buffalo State.Buffalo Police are continuing to investigate the incident with assistance from University Police. Remain Shelter-in-Place

Please continue to shelter in place as UPD and local law enforcement respond to the ongoing situation. It remains active as police are looking for some of the individuals believed to be involved. UPD will issue an all-clear when it is safe to do so.
Shelter-in-Place and Remain Indoors

Due to a security incident nearby, please avoid the area and those on campus should shelter-in-place until otherwise notified. See below for shelter-in-place instructions. Remain in shelter-in-place until given the all-clear from University Police. As more information becomes available, updates will be provided via Buff State Alert.
What to do during a shelter-in-place order: Remain indoors. Do not leave until an "all clear" message has been issued.
- Stay inside the building or go inside a building as quickly as possible if you are outside.
- Share the notification with others in the building, if possible, but do not leave the area where you were instructed to shelter-in-place.
- Close windows to provide a tighter seal against possible chemical vapors, smoke, and/or fumes.
- In the event of a hazardous materials release, turn off fans, air conditioning or ventilation systems, if you have access to control these systems.
- Locate supplies you may need such as food, water, cellphone, radio, flashlights, etc.
- Remain in “Shelter-in-Place” until instructed otherwise through Buff State Alert.
What it means: A shelter-in-place order may be issued, rather than a lockdown or evacuation order, during emergency situations such as severe weather, a hazardous material release, or an incident involving police activity where fewer people outside would provide a tactical advantage for the police and safety for the campus community. Remain in “Shelter-in-Place” until instructed otherwise through Buff State Alert.
