Buffalo State senior Michaelangelo Hill was recently named one of three winners of the annual Dr. L. Eudora Pettigrew Women’s History Summer Research Excellence Grants for student researchers. Hill, a history major, was awarded to research the topic “Dorothea Dix: Pain and Progress.”

The Dr. L. Eudora Pettigrew Women’s History Summer Research Excellence Grants are named in honor of the first Black college president in the SUNY system. This initiative provides SUNY undergraduate students with the opportunity to pursue an innovative community-based applied-learning experience in women’s history. Working under the advisement of campus faculty members, and each receiving financial support, selected students will conduct original research at New York historical sites, libraries, historical societies, museums, and other institutions.

“SUNY prides itself on being an institution where scholars have the resources to dive into the most critical research subjects,” said SUNY Chancellor John B. King. “With thanks to the SUNY Board of Trustees and through initiatives like the Pettigrew Research Excellence Grants, we pave the way to new discoveries in underrepresented fields. Congratulations to Bobbi Griffith, Michaelangelo Hill, and Isabella Richmond for their well-earned recognition, we look forward to seeing how their work advances our understanding of women’s history and New York State history.”

Hill was also the recipient of the Vernon Bullough Award for Excellence in Historical Research at the Buffalo State History Department’s Student Awards Ceremony and winner of “Most Effective Foreign Minister” at the 39th annual SUNY Model European Union, both held at Buffalo State in April.

“The History Department is proud of Michaelangelo’s recognition and accomplishments,” said Andrew Nicholls, chair of the History Department, “both from SUNY and at Model EU.”
