The entire Buffalo State College community is invited to attend Buffalo State College Day on Friday, September 17, a special event to officially kick off the college’s 150th anniversary celebration. The festivities begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall with a live presentation featuring remarks, official proclamations, dance performances, and the debut of Buffalo State’s new alma mater.

Buffalo State alumni Claudine Ewing, ’92, anchor at WGRZ-TV, and Matt Bové, ’13, sports director at WKBW-TV, will serve as masters of ceremonies for the event.

The presentation will include music by the African American Cultural Center’s Kakilambe Dance and Drum Performance Company, performances by Buffalo State student dancers and a local dance troupe, and a short video history of the college.

In addition, the winner of the Buffalo State College alma mater contest will be revealed at the event. The contest challenged participants to rewrite the lyrics of the traditional alma mater, “Our Finest Hour,” written by L. Harry Ray and first published in the Elms yearbook in 1951.

A reception with light hors d’oeuvres will be held immediately following the celebration on the front lawn of Rockwell Hall. The reception will feature a toast to 150 years by President Katherine Conway-Turner and music by the Buffalo State Faculty Jazz Ensemble.

Guests are reminded to bring a face mask to wear at both events, in keeping with Buffalo State’s COVID-19 protocols.

Buffalo City Hall and other city landmarks, as well as Rockwell Hall and the Burchfield Penney Art Center, will be illuminated in orange that evening in honor of Buffalo State’s anniversary celebration. This outdoor lighting program of the area’s iconic buildings and structures is coordinated by the Buffalo Landmark Illumination Team (BuffaloLIT).
