On April 25, the Buffalo State Foundation’s annual scholarship gala, Bengala, joined forces with the RUNWAY, Buffalo State University’s Fashion and Textile Technology program’s annual student-produced fashion show, for a dynamic, student-centered celebration of creativity, community, and opportunity.
This year, RUNWAY, presented by New Era Cap Foundation, had a theme of “AMPLIFY,” which wasn’t about being louder for attention, but about being louder for purpose. This year’s show featured 16 senior designers, along with multiple models and other participants.
“AMPLIFY invited our students to use fashion as a vehicle for purpose,” said Erin Habes, RUNWAY director and FTT lecturer. “Student designers partnered with nonprofits that reflected their values, transforming their collections into stories of advocacy, identity and impact. AMPLIFY reminded us that when students design with intention and for others, their impact extends far beyond the runway.”
Senior designer Grace Villanueva, partnering with nonprofit Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, incorporated algae into her collection and created yarn from it. Her garments transform, and in some cases dissolve, when exposed to elements. Her collection explores biodegradable textiles, bioplastics and the power of material transformation.
In addition to presenting sponsor New Era Cap Foundation, the event was supported by two Amplify sponsors: The Martin Group and West Herr Auto Group. Funding from these organizations supported supplies for senior designers creating their collections, Bengala scholarships, and the attendance of representatives from non-profit organizations Homespace, the Summit Center, Voice Buffalo, Mental Health Advocates of WNY, the African American Cultural Center, Volunteer Lawyer Project, Stitch Buffalo, DUMAS Rise Providers, Compeer, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, Journey’s End, Upward Design for Life, Rachel’s Warrior Foundation, Hispanic Heritage Center, and HEAL International.
“At The Martin Group, we believe creativity has the power to drive real impact,” said Tod Martin, chairman and CEO of The Martin Group. “Bengala + RUNWAY brings that to life by connecting student talent with causes that matter. It’s an honor to support an event that amplifies both artistic expression and community impact.”
"Bengala + RUNWAY was an inspiring reminder of what’s possible when creativity, education, and community partner with intention,” said Rhonda Frederick, West
Herr Director of Community Giving and Support. “We were proud to support an event that amplifies student voices and provides meaningful resources for emerging designers.”
“Witnessing students collaborate with nonprofit partners and use fashion as a powerful platform for storytelling, advocacy, and community impact reinforced why West Herr is committed to investing in opportunities that uplift students and strengthen our communities,” added Latricia Davis, West Herr Director of Inclusion.
Senior designer Artis amplified the Summit Center through a collection rooted in inclusion, support, and empowerment. His work highlights the importance of accessible services and community understanding—using design to tell a story that deserves to be seen, felt, and supported.
