About the Program
Students develop their ability to communicate in Spanish in both everyday and professional contexts, and are introduced to the civilizations, cultures, and literature of Spain and Latin America. Students are also encouraged to study in Spain or Latin America through an approved study away program.
Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
1. participate in a wide variety of professional and everyday conversations in Spanish with only a limited number of misunderstandings, including with native Spanish speakers who are not accustomed to conversing with non-native speakers;
2. read and write Spanish texts in a largely clear, precise, and accurate way, including the kinds of texts that are common in professional contexts (e.g., emails, memos, contracts, bills, reports, and minutes);
3. explain the influence of history, geography, and institutions on the development of Spanish-speaking countries and regions;
4. characterize the values, attitudes, customs, beliefs, and conventions particular to various Spanish-speaking countries and regions;
5. discuss the major writers, genres, and periods of Spanish and Latin-American literature; and
6. interpret beyond surface meaning and discuss representative works from the major writers, genres, and periods of Spanish and Latin-American literature.
