About the Program
The Earth and Space Sciences minor is designed to provide foundational knowledge in astronomy, meteorology and geoscience topics. The minor benefits students who have taken or plan to take other geoscience courses that will count toward earth science teacher certification, and it gives a foundation for students interested in careers in non-formal education positions with non-profits, museums, community centers, etc.
Learning Outcomes
Students will:
1. demonstrate knowledge of fundamental concepts related to topics in earth and space science
2. apply scientific inquiry, analyze data, and test hypotheses related to earth and space problems
3. describe the structure, composition, and physical processes of Earth’s atmosphere and hydrosphere
4. explain the formation, properties, and evolution of planets, stars, galaxies, and the universe
5. communicate scientific concepts effectively via presentations and written reports
Program Requirements
Required Courses (12 credit hours)
Complete ALL of the following Courses:
GES131 INTRODUCTORY ASTRONOMY | 3 - Credit Hours
GES111 OCEANOGRAPHY | 3 - Credit Hours
OR GES124 NATURAL HAZARDS | 3 - Credit Hours
GES331 MODERN SOLAR SYSTEM ASTRONOMY | 3 - Credit Hours
OR GES332 STELLAR AND GALACTIC ASTRONOMY | 3 - Credit Hours
Electives (6-8 credit hours)
Any two GES 3XX or GES 4XX courses by advisement.
18-20 Total Credit Hours
